What is A Genetically Modified Organism?
If you have been around my website, you will often see the word GMO, or Non GMO or even GMO free!
So what exactly is a GMO? A GMO is a genetically modified organism. In the mid 1990’s scientist began exploring and they took a gene from one species DNA and then artificially combined it with another gene of a plant or animal.
This has brought on a huge debate! Are GMO’s safe to eat, do they use less or more herbicides and pesticides, do GMO’s make you sick, and what is the financial and social impacts?
As stated in the infographic below:
Perhaps the greatest impediment to the GMO debate is that GMOs have only been around for 2 decades, and longer-term impacts of GMO crops on yield success, consumer health and environmental impact have yet to be explored. So stay on the lookout for GMO’s in the news: the debate looks to continue for quite some time.
