Balcony Garden Update
Hi Everyone. Thanks for visiting my update. My balcony garden is coming right along!
In a past post, farmers markets are a great way to get food in season, I shared steps to starting your own balcony garden. What you can’t get at your farmers market, or at your local grocery store, you can always grow at home.
Also in a previous post, I shared how to start an organic urban garden for your balcony and I have an additional update.
Originally, I wanted to share a recipe using the tomatoes, but unfortunately, my tomato plant hasn’t decided to mature entirely, yet.
In the image (above) you will see the different stages of the tomato plant. Simply watering everyday to every other day isn’t so bad after all. I find myself asking, “why didn’t I do this sooner?!”
In my earlier post, I also mentioned I may have to place a stake in the dirt to help keep the plant standing straight, but in an effort to be “green,” and make use of the resources around the apartment, a piece of velcro was used to attach the plant to the railing of the balcony. Perfect!
It’s amazing the strong smell of tomato coming from the plant already. Once the tomato has a uniform color in addition to firm skin that gives just slightly when gently pressed with my thumb, I will tug gently to see if it’s ready to come off the vine. If it releases easily, I’ll be ready to nourish my body with some carotenoid lycopene (aka the tomato)!
