Stepping Into Spring With Your Canine Friends And A Holistic Gluten Free Dog Treat Recipe

How To Make Holistic Dog Treats | WholeLifestyleNutrition.com

Spring…A Welcomed Season After A Long Winter

After being buried in the snow in Kansas City for the last few weeks and cold temperatures, we had a spring-like day and you can bet I was going to take advantage of it!  The “kids” and I headed outside for fun in the sun and little did they know, yummy treats were in order.

I am always looking for healthier snacks for our “Cainine Kiddos” (I know “Cainine is spelled wrong, but not for me…check out my last name) 😉 .

We have three very pampered pooches who have sensitive tummies and allergies so we have to be very careful what we feed them.  Have you read the ingredients lately on the box of dog treats lately?  Scary business!

So before we venture into the kitchen, I thought I would head outside on this beautiful spring day to get some fresh air and play a little with my 3 pooches!

Meet My Dogs:  Nikki, Andy & Smokie

So after a long winter indoors with minimal exercise, we decided to get this spring season kicked off right! We headed outdoors to play a little fetch!

I always liked the saying that a dog doesn’t stop playing when he gets old, a dog gets old when he stops playing!  (Think about that one for a moment) 🙂

So here are my dogs: Nikki, Andy & Smokie ready for some fun on this amazing spring day!

Way to guard the compost bins, Smokie!

He has other talents, catching a ball or frisbee isn’t one of them. 😕

Time to rest while I head into the kitchen to make some treats.

About Rhonda Cain

Working in health care for over 17 years, I thought I had always lived a fairly healthy lifestyle. Almost 3 years ago I embarked on a journey and soon realized everything I had been taught to better health was actually the culprit of many of my problems. In the process of changing to eating whole, organic foods, researching how it effect our lives, my eyes were opened to "green living". I began to venture out in my great city, Kansas City, which I have lived in for over 20 years, and have met some amazing people setting the pace for a local movement in the food and environment awareness scene. My goal is to educate people "living green" can be much more than recycling cans and paper; it can lead to good eats and a healthier lifestyle.

@obearlady  Not really for 4 cups of flour.  If you need to, reduce it to 1/4 tsp

I “eyeball” just about everything.  I think once you see who much the recipe makes, 1/2 tsp of salt is not much but please adjust if you need to.  I actually did taste the dough.  : )

Another idea, I am going to play with is substuting out the pumpkin with sweet potatoes.  My “kids” absolutely LOVE this snacks.

I wonder if you could use baby food, meat flavor instead of pumpkin.Instead of milk salt free meat bouillon?Pumpkin is good to but meat flavor dog treats just sound like something my dogs would love.

@lauren Those are great ideas!  Since baby food is not quite as dense than the canned pumpkin, it may take a little more brown rice flour.

Pumpkin is one of those amazing foods all the time.  Just yesterday I used it in place of the eggs, water, and oil in my mum’s birthday cake… so good!  🙂  My “kid” is also a HUGE pumpkin fan, sometimes I replace half of his dry food with it as a special treat

“1 can organic pumpkin” – I’ve seen pumpkin puree sold in 3 or 4 different sizes of cans! is this the “standard” soup-can size can? or the bigger 14 or 15oz size? (those two are most common)

    @JLT I’d say the 14 oz can.

So where does the milk come in? It never mentioned milk in the directions.
