There are several things I do not attempt to grow. Most of them are fruit trees. When I lived in Savannah, Georgia I did grow lemons, limes and some oranges. Now that I live in the midwest, the fruit trees for my area would be apples, pears and plums. I still love the fresh local fruit, so every year we head to the local orchard to get some fresh apples, pears and plums.
If you haven’t been to an orchard, you are in for quite a treat. My family and I love going. This year we picked a bushel of windfall apples. Windfall apples are apples that fall from the tree (usually from the wind), and instead of picking them off the tree, you pick them off the ground. They often times will be slightly bruised but we use these apples for our applesauce. Windfalls are reduced greatly in price. We got an 85% discount, Now that is saving!
We also picked some Gingergold apples. My orchard has over 18 different varieties so we make several trips throughout the season. If you would try my applesauce recipe click here! Happy picking!!
