When Accidents Happen
Many of us are blessed to have animals to brighten our lives! They bring us so much joy, don’t they? But what happens when an accident occurs?
You know what I mean, your puppy is potty training and pees on the carpet or your cat is getting old and misses the kitty litter. How do you get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way?
Stick around…I am about to tell you how! But first…here is our story.
Here Is Our Story
A few years ago we had a cat, Mason. We just LOVED Mason! I mean how cute is Mason right?

Unfortunately, Mason was getting very old, 17 years in this picture. With age, sometimes cats begin to have kidney problems and oftentimes have a hard time squatting and pee standing up rather than squatting. This leads to the cat spraying urine on the wall behind the litter and oftentimes on the sides of the litter.
Well….have you ever tried to get cat urine out of carpet or hardwood floors before? Oh my gosh, it is nearly impossible.
I tried everything under the sun to try to get rid of these smells but it wasn’t until I tried to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way that I finally tackled my problem!
And then Gemma came along…PUPPY….need I say more? Puppy and Pee go hand and hand don’t they? With these two adorable pictures are you wanting to run out and get a fuzzy animal yet?

So with an aging cat and a new puppy, you could imagine that we experimented a LOT with getting urine out of carpets and floors.
I think I have finally perfected the PERFECT formula to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!

How To Get Rid of Dog and Cat Urine Odors The All Natural Way
So what is this formula you ask? Would you believe me if I told you it has only 4 ingredients? Better yet, you most likely already have these 4 ingredients in your home already!
Here is what you are going to need:
- Empty Spray Bottle
- White Vinegar (See my post on How Vinegar Gets Bad Odors Out of HE Washer Machines)
- Dish Soap with Orange Scent, or Wild Orange Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here), (note: I have found that essential oils produce the best results).
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Baking Soda
Depending on the size of the area you are treating you might need to double or triple this recipe. Only make what you are going to use.
Safety Note: Dispose any leftover formula, do not leave it in the spray bottle.
Although this is a natural formula, you are mixing together items that could have a reaction if left to sit. Be safe and properly dispose of the leftovers if any.
As with any product, ALWAYS test a small section of the carpet, hardwood floors or furniture to make sure that this formula doesn’t react negatively with your items.
We used this formula on wood, carpets and linoleum floors and had no issues with any of them…but always check to be on the safe side!
The Formula
Now that we have the ingredients and safety all taken care of, let’s dive into this simple formula.
Pour the following ingredients into a spray bottle:
- 5 oz hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp dishwasher orange soap (something about the orange scent help break up the urine smell), or for best results use 3 drops of wild orange essential oil (You Can Buy Here)
When all of the ingredients have been added, gently shake the bottle. Now simply generously spray the affected area with this solution and allow to completely dry. It will become powder-like once the formula dries.
Once it dries vacuum up the powder. If the smell is still there, then repeat this step again and add the extra step included below.
Final Application To Purify The Area
If you want to take this formula one step further, be sure to purify the area. To do:
- Add 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here) to 1 cup of baking soda and place into a container and shake until well combined.
- Sprinkle on the dry affected area and leave on for several hours or overnight.
- Vacuum up and you will be good to go!
That’s It, How Easy Was That?
That is it! Easy right? Who knew it was so easy to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!
As always, I am here if you should have any questions! Feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

definitely going to try this. Since I have helped local dog rescue groups, my house isn’t the most pleasant smelling. So glad this will get rid of it so we can have company (people) again.
My cat just peed on my VERY expensive meditation pillow that is beaded/lacy/etc. It’s been years since she peed on anything. It used to be my couch cushions and I would submerge them in something I bought from Petsmart. Now I’m in Germany and so no access to a Petsmart needless to say. I’m not sure just spraying this pillow is going to remove the odor. Any ideas?
I don’t have orange scented, just the blue dawn, do you think it would still work?
@AngelCrisp The article mentioned something about the orange scent is what really does the trick. I personally never buy products like Dawn or Ajax or Palmolive, but I did go out and buy a bottle of the orange stuff JUST for this. And b/c I’m in Germany at the mercy of the offerings of the BX, I could only get an enormous bottle for this which will require only 1/2 tsp or so. I’d go get the orange stuff.
Lisa Dodd check this out! This is the post I was telling you about! 🙂
I have not tried this one, so today I am going to…and I will be back when I find out if it works !!! Thank you…justjan
We recently had a foster dog that we had to house train. She found a forever home last week, so this week I will be trying this out for sure. Thanks!
do you mix this with water?
Help me pleeeeeeeaaaassssse – I’ve recently purchased a pair of expensive shoes and my cat pee’d IN them – the smell is awful – I cannot put my foot in one of them – yuck! I’ve managed to get the smell off of the putside of one shoe, but the inside of the shoe smells REALLY BAD – any ideas
Use an organic natural product called Freshana. It literally is a miracle worker on pet odors and urine. I swear by it. http://FreshanaOrganic.com
Peroxide on the carpet? Doesn’t it bleach the carpet? Pauline
Not at all! I use it on carpets and clothing ! Mix with vinegar and baking soda for a great stain remover
OMG! Thank you for saving mw and my relationship with my new puppy. I discovered that she has been peeing IN MY BED! I was horrified and so upset by it. I used the over the counter remedy that I thought was a sure thing but the odor was still there so I went online. I discovered your link and tried it . ONE TIME and the smell is gone. Not only that but it has a nice clean smell. I can’t thank you enough!
I have 4 cats and 3 suddenly refuse to use the litter box they have decided my daughters room was a suitable substitute, obviously I’m less than thrilled, especially where my daughter is an asthmatic. I constantly clean the litter box my one little guy does use it. I’ve tried different litters I’ve taken them to the vet there is not medical reason why they are doing this. I tried this mixture and you can still smell cat pee maybe I did it wrong? I’m desperate to get rid of the smell my daughter hasn’t been able to use her room in a long while my next step is replacing the rug I’d like to avoid that if possible any suggestions?
The sad truth is nearly all companies that manufacture products to remove urine and odors have no idea that their products do not work. Those that do know, have shown that they do not care about the truth or are concerned with the negative health factors their products create.
If they did test their products under a high-powered microscope they would see their organic based product actually rolls off dried urine, pulls the moisture out of the urine or just dissolve’s fresh urine. Once the liquid evaporates dried urine inorganic components return and becomes more difficult to remove. Most enzyme formulas become food for bacteria mold and mildew growth under the carpet.
You might be asking yourself how can this be? Thousands of store buyers and millions upon millions of pet owners trust their purchased products and recommend them daily. Can they all be wrong?
The answer is yes. The store owner and customers want to believe their urine issues are gone. And thus the cleanup category grows and grows each year as the pet industry continues to buy and sell these products.
How can this have happened? The answer lies in how the modern day cleanup category began and pet urine being water soluble.
1957: Odormute begins selling a pack of manmade powdered organic enzymes for urine removal. Directions say to mix and use within one hour.
1960’s: Proctor and Gamble invests in R & D testing “Enzymes” for use in their products. After nearly ten years they determined this digester inspired from nature does not work. Enzymes do not target urine components and remove them.
1978: The founder of The Brampton Company (Simple Solution) sold a concentrated product when mixed by the pet owner with water claimed it would remove pet urine. He determined that ready to use enzyme products could not be effective.
1980’s: Nature’s Miracle founder Joe Weiss came out with a ready to use product (RTU) using a stock organic enzyme formula packaged by Venus Laboratories. This occurred after the founder’s wife used her husbands drain cleaning enzyme based classroom cleaner to treat a cat urine accident in their carpet. When her husband came home, she told him what she did. Two weeks later Nature’s Miracle Stain and Odor remover was born. At pet trade shows the Weiss family sold this new untested product to pet supply buyers for pet stores. The Weiss’s claimed that “Nature made it work” and “It works when other products fail.” and sold millions of bottles. The formula only works on organic compounds in urine and leaves inorganic compounds that it cannot remove.
The Brampton Company attempted to convince its pet store buyers that a ready to use enzyme product did not work. Few listened and believed the fresh sales pitch from Nature’s Miracle. Brampton Company was forced to come out with their own enzyme based ready to use product after their market share nearly vanished.
1985: The future founder of Life’s Great Products, discovers that his daughters puppy would not housebreak because it smelled the marking scent in urine under the carpet. He purchased stain and odor removers from local pet stores and determined none worked and created mold and mildew and horrible odors inside the carpet. He spends the next seven years searching for something that removes pet urine and does not cause mold and mildew issues. He finally creates a blend of organic and inorganic digesters that target the five components he discovers are in urine and cat spray. The products are verified under a microscope total cleanup of urine results in the cleanup category and by pet owners given the product by Veterinarians to solve pet urine related issues.
1994: Life’s Great Products, introduces Dumb Cat Anti-Marking and Cat Spray Remover to local pet stores. Pet owners find that cats that stopped using the litter box returned after treating areas with the product. Poop-Off Bird Poop Remover arrives and Poop-Off Superior for dogs. The only products in the cleanup category proven under a microscope to remove urine and safely dissolve bird droppings.
2003, Nature’s Miracle is sold to Eight and One. The new company cancels production with Venus Laboratories and adds their own organic enzyme based liquid to the products and slowly changed the labeling to reflect the product worked in two minutes. Their formula was similar to the original Venus Laboratory stock formula. For twenty-seven years under the original company the product instructions said to leave the product on the treated areas and keep wet for two weeks.
2015, Under a microscope test show every product currently made by the new Nature’s Miracle Corporation fails to remove inorganic urine issues in any form. Today, there are more than fifty products for urine treatment made by Nature’s Miracle. Tens of thousands of other products from numerous companies using the same enzyme formula are sold and containing other active ingredients like orange oil, Oxy, color safe bleach, fat digesting bacteria, organic digesting bacteria, yeast, oils, solvents, detergents, soaps, chemical mixtures and more crazy concoctions. These companies all work on the belief that they have loyal customers that swear by how effective their product is. Every company guarantees their products to be the best available. Under a microscope none remove urine or the five inorganic components in urine.
They are all wrong in their promotion of their products. All they need to do is have a private lab or science department at a university test their products under a microscope to see that they are wrong. More than 99.9% of the products sold in the pet cleanup category “Do Not Work!”
The enzymes do work but you have to use a steam cleaner to extract it…if you don’t then your right it wont work..the enymes coat the fibers but again have to be extracted. Also you can’t use essential oils to prevent cats from marking!!! Their livers can’t process them!! Dogs can but not cats…it can make them very ill or kill them…so you need to change your information…NOW.
I totally believe what ANGELA SAYS is correct about essential oils and cats not being able to process them. My sister used room spray and plug in deodorizers to mask the cat smell in her home. The vet told her to quit because it was making her cat sick. She didn’t quit using them and her cat died. She still using them. Grrrrr
Yep! Natures Miracle does not work; and, in fact caused my eyes to burn, sore throat and asthma. My husband had bad reactions to it, as well. They really didn’t care when I called-yesterday-and said it was probably the fragrance added. But, he never responded when I said it didn’t even take out the urine smell. Hence, why I appreciate this recipe and am looking forward to trying it! Thank you.
