I have had a love-hate relationship with my laundry! You see I am not a fan of my high-efficiency washer machine and have had more issues with HE washer machine that it has completely frustrated me.
Through my frustrations, however, I learned some pretty amazing techniques to help conquer my issues with HE washer machines. Like in this post: Follow This One Tip & Say Goodbye To A Smelly High Efficiency Washer Machine Forever!
With this one tip, I quickly learned that VINEGAR is the one ingredient I could not live without in my laundry room. I use it for everything!
Vinegar Makes Everything Better!
So vinegar…what did I ever do without it? I buy it by the gallon and go through it easily in 1 weeks time.
One of my favorite ways to use vinegar is to soften my clothes naturally. Yep, vinegar is a natural way to soften your clothes and it kills harmful bacteria that could be making your clothes smelly too!
So today I am going to share several of my favorite ways to make an All Natural Scented Fabric Softener. You will be amazed how easy it is to make and it is free of harmful chemicals and dyes that store bought fabric softeners are loaded with!
Using Essential Oils
I just love essential oils! Just a few drops can do wonders when trying to freshen up a load of laundry.
What’s better yet, there are so many different essential oils that one could use.
Think about that, if you feel like lavender scented laundry, or linen fresh laundry, you can have it. I like to change my all natural scented fabric softener with the changing seasons.
Just choose one of these oils or you can make a blend of your own!
- Spring ~ Lemon, Cleansing Blend, Lavender, Cilantro (Fresh Smelling Scents)
- Summer ~ Wild Orange, Grapefruit, Lime, Citrus Bliss (Citrus Fresh Summer Scents)
- Fall ~ Lavender, Cleansing Blend, Juniper Berry, Joyful Blend
- Winter ~ Peppermint, Wintergreen, Lavender (All Uplifting Oils to Help with the Winter Blues)
And don’t worry, the oils will NOT stain your clothes! Okay, so let’s put together this all naturally scented fabric softener recipe shall we? It is so easy!

I love vinegar! Glad to hear I’m not the only one who can use up a gallon in only a week 🙂 Thanks for this easy recipe – my husband hates that I don’t use fabric softener, but I just can’t bring myself to buy that nasty, toxic stuff… Can’t wait to try this!

We tried white vinegar and our clothes didn’t soften up including the towels. Any suggestions?

Do you put in your laundry detergent as well?
Halle Cottis says
No I just put it on a wet towel right into the dryer.

Can this be safely used with cloth diappers?
Thanks!

Hi! I’m Australian and we dry clothes outdoors in the sun 99 out of 100 times. Even when I use he dryer (which is maybe six times a year and just to finish off towels if they aren’t dry properly) I never use a dryer sheet. On rainy days we hang clothes indoors on a “clothes horse” near the fire or in a well ventilated room. It’s totally worth trying to go without any softeners if you’re up for the challenge!

This scented fabric softener was wonderful!! It really made my husbands work shirts smell so fresh and soft! I tried the winter blend and I love it! I will be trying the rest of the season blends. I love those scented beads but since they are loaded with so many chemicals and expensive, I am definitely making my own from now on. Thank you Halle for this diy recipe.

Aside from the essential oils, is there a way to cut the vinegar smell a little? I really like using natural product but I do find that I smell mostly vinegar even though I’m using quality essential oils.
Thank you for the scent recipes.

I have heard adding a little baking soda works.

Hallie, I’m trying this for the first time but I’m unsure of when to use it.
I wash my clothes and always run a 2nd rinse. This is when I use fabric softener.
Nothings changed???
Sorry if this is a silly question.?
