Our Holiday Traditions
I absolutely love holiday traditions! Today I thought I’d share a few of our holiday traditions with you all!
Check out the photo above. Do you have an elf on the shelf? This is one of our favorite ways to welcome the holiday season.
What is elf on the shelf? Well, for our family it is a little elf that comes out on Thanksgiving night and each night he hides in different spots around the house. He might hide
- In the tree
- In a stocking
- Hanging from a chandelier
- In the kids bathroom
- Fishing in the fish tank
You never know where your elf will be. Each morning my girls wake up and go on a search for Koodles. Yep, Koodles is our elf’s name. Once they spot him, they are not allowed to touch him or he will lose his magic powers.
All day Koodles keeps a watchful eye on them to see if they have been naughty or nice. Then when nighttime comes and the girls fall fast asleep, Koodles flies back to the North Pole to tell Santa if the girls have been naughty or nice.
Koodle’s usually makes his first appearance at our Thanksgiving feast. Last year he was hiding in the hot rolls basket and when my girls went to get the hot roll and unfolded the napkin that kept the rolls warm, there was Koodles. They squealed with delight!!
Join me on Instagram, where I am posting his hiding spots frequently.
Getting Our Christmas Tree
The day after Thanksgiving we always head to the tree farm to cut down our very own Christmas tree!
Oh yes, my husband gripes about having to cut one down with a hand saw, but I always say, “But honey, it is one of our holiday traditions!
Here are my babies with the tree they chose this year.
Below 0ºF Temperatures
It wasn’t to terribly cold this year and we only had about 2 inches of snow on the ground, but last year was another story! It was SO cold, below 0ºF and the wind was BRUTAL!
But…you know me…but honey, It is our family tradition to get the tree the day after Thanksgiving!
Y’all have to remember my husband is from Savannah, Georgia and he still to this day can’t get use to these brutal winters here in Wisconsin. Now me on the other hand, I grew up in the mid west, so I adapted quite quickly and so did our girls.
I laugh every time I see this photo! 😉 Yep, that is my husband buried under all that gear!
Enjoying Some Homemade Hot Cocoa
After we pick the tree out, you can bet we head home to grab the homemade organic hot cocoa mix out of the pantry and whip us up a delicious cup of amazing hot cocoa.
We make a fresh cut on the tree stem and get it ready for the night of decorating. We put on some Holiday music from Bing Crosby (yeah, it has to be Bing Crosby, we just LOVE him), and we start to decorate!
So much fun, I just love this time of year. Tell me, what are some of your favorite holiday traditions?
From our family to yours, here is wishing you an amazing holiday season!
I have to laugh at the photo of your husband! I’m from Florida, and this will be my first winter in Pittsburgh – I think I’ll have a similar get-up on!
Loved seeing your holiday traditions – it’s always nice to get some inspiration from another family! We love to anticipate Christmas with our family Advent tradition of nightly prayers by candlelight before opening up the Advent calendar – the kids love this…
Pittsburgh hu? Steelers fan yet? Love the advent, I left that out of this post…gosh we have so many fun traditions around this time of year!
