When Accidents Happen
Many of us are blessed to have animals to brighten our lives! They bring us so much joy, don’t they? But what happens when an accident occurs?
You know what I mean, your puppy is potty training and pees on the carpet or your cat is getting old and misses the kitty litter. How do you get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way?
Stick around…I am about to tell you how! But first…here is our story.
Here Is Our Story
A few years ago we had a cat, Mason. We just LOVED Mason! I mean how cute is Mason right?
Unfortunately, Mason was getting very old, 17 years in this picture. With age, sometimes cats begin to have kidney problems and oftentimes have a hard time squatting and pee standing up rather than squatting. This leads to the cat spraying urine on the wall behind the litter and oftentimes on the sides of the litter.
Well….have you ever tried to get cat urine out of carpet or hardwood floors before? Oh my gosh, it is nearly impossible.
I tried everything under the sun to try to get rid of these smells but it wasn’t until I tried to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way that I finally tackled my problem!
And then Gemma came along…PUPPY….need I say more? Puppy and Pee go hand and hand don’t they? With these two adorable pictures are you wanting to run out and get a fuzzy animal yet?
So with an aging cat and a new puppy, you could imagine that we experimented a LOT with getting urine out of carpets and floors.
I think I have finally perfected the PERFECT formula to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!
How To Get Rid of Dog and Cat Urine Odors The All Natural Way
So what is this formula you ask? Would you believe me if I told you it has only 4 ingredients? Better yet, you most likely already have these 4 ingredients in your home already!
Here is what you are going to need:
- Empty Spray Bottle
- White Vinegar (See my post on How Vinegar Gets Bad Odors Out of HE Washer Machines)
- Dish Soap with Orange Scent, or Wild Orange Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here), (note: I have found that essential oils produce the best results).
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Baking Soda
Depending on the size of the area you are treating you might need to double or triple this recipe. Only make what you are going to use.
Safety Note: Dispose any leftover formula, do not leave it in the spray bottle.
Although this is a natural formula, you are mixing together items that could have a reaction if left to sit. Be safe and properly dispose of the leftovers if any.
As with any product, ALWAYS test a small section of the carpet, hardwood floors or furniture to make sure that this formula doesn’t react negatively with your items.
We used this formula on wood, carpets and linoleum floors and had no issues with any of them…but always check to be on the safe side!
The Formula
Now that we have the ingredients and safety all taken care of, let’s dive into this simple formula.
Pour the following ingredients into a spray bottle:
- 5 oz hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp dishwasher orange soap (something about the orange scent help break up the urine smell), or for best results use 3 drops of wild orange essential oil (You Can Buy Here)
When all of the ingredients have been added, gently shake the bottle. Now simply generously spray the affected area with this solution and allow to completely dry. It will become powder-like once the formula dries.
Once it dries vacuum up the powder. If the smell is still there, then repeat this step again and add the extra step included below.
Final Application To Purify The Area
If you want to take this formula one step further, be sure to purify the area. To do:
- Add 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here) to 1 cup of baking soda and place into a container and shake until well combined.
- Sprinkle on the dry affected area and leave on for several hours or overnight.
- Vacuum up and you will be good to go!
That’s It, How Easy Was That?
That is it! Easy right? Who knew it was so easy to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!
As always, I am here if you should have any questions! Feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

I love this!! I just treated the dog bedding, kennel, and the wall behind them. There was still a noticeable odor (but greatly improved), so I mixed up another batch and added the lister one to it and re sprayed. Worked wonderfully and the smell is pleasant and clean. Thanks!
Sorry. Spell check! Listerine
I have done much research on the topic and believe the reason the orange oil works best is because of the enzymes. the mysterious scientific “enzymes” found in store bought odor removers can actually be reproduced using citrus fruit. Another Way to do this is with orange peels.
There are only two ways to breakdown the odors of urine, biological enzymes or carbon dioxide. Using a mixture of both, which your recipe seems to do, is probably why it works so well!
Now my turn to try it!
Any suggestions on a blend that will deter spraying in va specific area? Can’t wait to try this on my carpets.
I just moved into a loft apartment that a cat lived in and the tenant wasn’t very clean. All vinyl flooring and carpeting has been replaced, portions of drywall were replaced, walls and floors were painted with kilz prior to new flooring and paint. Everything has been cleaned. Yet there is still an odor that to me smells like cat urine. Is there something I can spray into the air of such a large open space (loft) to help remove the smell? I don’t know where the smell could still be coming from, but it’s there. Thank you.
Even I was irritated because of this behavior of my male cat “Pogo”. Believe me I TRIED EVERY POSSIBLE WAY available on google to stop this spraying problem. After reading some articles I thought of buying Cat Spray No More product… believe me… It worked just after 4 days!! Pogo is peeing only in his litter box!! 😀 I’m soo happy… Thanks a lot Mandy for suggesting it… 100% satisfied 😀
For those of you who want to buy it, here’s this link : http://bit.ly/1IkmSUB
I would suggest you all to give it a try as its cheap and has helped me and many people here…!!
Thanks for the cleaning receipt! I desperately need some effective cleaning way, so I get rid of the stains my cat leaves at home! Greetings
Can I use apple cider vinegar instead of white?
Our cat Puffy has been driving the entire family crazy with his spraying everywhere.
We bought de-scenting sprays and special cleaners, which he ignored and re-marked all over the house…some advice? (I refuse neuter my cat.)
Thank you.
Once a cat sprays it becomes a habit. Neutering sometimes helps, but once the habit is established you get it. Now you want help. Dumb Cat Anti-Marking and Cat Spray Remover is the only product proven to remove cat spray. Cat spray is very hard to remove and when you believe it is gone, the scent is still found by the cat that sprays.
You have to find the invisible cat spray to know where to treat. There are plenty of led black light now on the market. Call your pet store or look online. Only purchase a LED variety. Tube black lights are great to glow a poster, a little tough to use around a home as you have to hold them two inches above the ground. A Led black light is used standing.
Urine and Cat Spray are substances that are some of the hardest to remove. You can believe home remedies work or not, it’s really up to you. If they really worked like the folks on this website believe, then why would anybody buy something from a pet shop, or online?
Once urine and cat spray dry out, they create odors because of the nitrogen that they produce. Cat’s tend to have high nitrogen that creates the strong smell. Dogs and cats with small or failing kidney’s can create very intense stink. There are over thirteen-thousand products made for urine and thousands of home remedies. All have followings and five star reviews. You have to wait five to six months for any product to prove it has worked. This is because of the makeup of urine and cat spray. Billions of tiny sponges attached around the inorganic material in urine. Once it dries out, it converts into different smells.
Nature creates this process because of natures need for animals to find their homes, habitats etc.. Enzymes in nature do not get rid of urine. Only rain dissolves it. Ah, this is why home remedies and commercial products seem to work. They contain water and water dissolves urine. But not cat spray. Cat spray is a sticky mucous and when it dries, it’s like concrete. Re-wet it and it’s back and worse than fresh.
Dumb Cat is the only commercial product that is formulated to remove cat spray. You have to get rid of the spray first if you want any chance of changing your spraying cat’s behavior. Nothing works instantly to remove urine or cat spray. You apply any product and make sure the pet is not able to return to the treated areas for seven to ten days. Then, if you removed the marking scent the cat will react. If they keep spraying, then you have not fixed the scent issue. Any product must reach the scent issue. If you just spray or pour a few ounces of product and there is two pints of spray to remove, it’s unlikely you will get results.
Most products get five star reviews hours or days after use. One star products, with five star reviews because most humans assume results. It’s the water in the product that demonstrate temporary results. Five or six months later the smell is still there. The human does not smell it because they get used to smells with hours or days. It’s funny how many folks rave about tobacco removal products. The smell of tobacco is still in the house or car. “No it is not!” I do not smell tobacco as they light up!
Can I mop my house with this solution? Will mopping my house with this solution help with the house training process? I wonder if it will prevent my dog from wanting to potty in the house.
Has anyone sprayed an entire room with this? I am thinking of putting it in a large sprayer (think large weed spray container) and then using a carpet shampooer with hot water. What do we think?
