When Accidents Happen
Many of us are blessed to have animals to brighten our lives! They bring us so much joy, don’t they? But what happens when an accident occurs?
You know what I mean, your puppy is potty training and pees on the carpet or your cat is getting old and misses the kitty litter. How do you get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way?
Stick around…I am about to tell you how! But first…here is our story.
Here Is Our Story
A few years ago we had a cat, Mason. We just LOVED Mason! I mean how cute is Mason right?

Unfortunately, Mason was getting very old, 17 years in this picture. With age, sometimes cats begin to have kidney problems and oftentimes have a hard time squatting and pee standing up rather than squatting. This leads to the cat spraying urine on the wall behind the litter and oftentimes on the sides of the litter.
Well….have you ever tried to get cat urine out of carpet or hardwood floors before? Oh my gosh, it is nearly impossible.
I tried everything under the sun to try to get rid of these smells but it wasn’t until I tried to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way that I finally tackled my problem!
And then Gemma came along…PUPPY….need I say more? Puppy and Pee go hand and hand don’t they? With these two adorable pictures are you wanting to run out and get a fuzzy animal yet?

So with an aging cat and a new puppy, you could imagine that we experimented a LOT with getting urine out of carpets and floors.
I think I have finally perfected the PERFECT formula to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!

How To Get Rid of Dog and Cat Urine Odors The All Natural Way
So what is this formula you ask? Would you believe me if I told you it has only 4 ingredients? Better yet, you most likely already have these 4 ingredients in your home already!
Here is what you are going to need:
- Empty Spray Bottle
- White Vinegar (See my post on How Vinegar Gets Bad Odors Out of HE Washer Machines)
- Dish Soap with Orange Scent, or Wild Orange Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here), (note: I have found that essential oils produce the best results).
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Baking Soda
Depending on the size of the area you are treating you might need to double or triple this recipe. Only make what you are going to use.
Safety Note: Dispose any leftover formula, do not leave it in the spray bottle.
Although this is a natural formula, you are mixing together items that could have a reaction if left to sit. Be safe and properly dispose of the leftovers if any.
As with any product, ALWAYS test a small section of the carpet, hardwood floors or furniture to make sure that this formula doesn’t react negatively with your items.
We used this formula on wood, carpets and linoleum floors and had no issues with any of them…but always check to be on the safe side!
The Formula
Now that we have the ingredients and safety all taken care of, let’s dive into this simple formula.
Pour the following ingredients into a spray bottle:
- 5 oz hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp dishwasher orange soap (something about the orange scent help break up the urine smell), or for best results use 3 drops of wild orange essential oil (You Can Buy Here)
When all of the ingredients have been added, gently shake the bottle. Now simply generously spray the affected area with this solution and allow to completely dry. It will become powder-like once the formula dries.
Once it dries vacuum up the powder. If the smell is still there, then repeat this step again and add the extra step included below.
Final Application To Purify The Area
If you want to take this formula one step further, be sure to purify the area. To do:
- Add 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here) to 1 cup of baking soda and place into a container and shake until well combined.
- Sprinkle on the dry affected area and leave on for several hours or overnight.
- Vacuum up and you will be good to go!
That’s It, How Easy Was That?
That is it! Easy right? Who knew it was so easy to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!

The best thing I’ve found to permanently remove cat urine is to use Listerine. It soaks down in the fibers, killing all the living bacteria. You may have to repeat it twice, but it has worked for me. Plus, it smells really good. First begin by blotting up any urine on the carpet. You can either spray or pour it directly on the urine spot. Let it dry and there you go. Cat urine odor gone.
My puppy rolled around in cat urine, will this be safe to wash the puppy in? If not do you have any suggestions?
Thank you,
Anna
Please help me my six month old dog pees and poops everywhere he afraid of potty pads and goes outside but comes back inside to do everything what should i do.
I didn’t have hydrogen peroxide handy, so I just made a solution of water, white vinegar (about equal parts), baking soda, dish soap, and orange extract.
I had cat who had been peeing in a couple places on our wall to wall carpet for years. We kept shampooing and treating the carpet and it really didn’t smell bad. But when we recently took up the carpet and pad, we discovered that the wood floor underneath was soaked in cat urine, to the point that some of the boards were rotting and the whole area reeked!
I down some of the above solution, just wiped it on generously with a rag, left it for about ten minutes and wiped it up and about 90% of the odor was gone. Given how bad the situation was, with urine soaked in to the boards for years, this was nothing short of miraculous! Cleaned the floor pretty well and did not take off the finish in the areas where there was any finish left. So I am doing it again and leaving it on longer to see if the remaining smell will improve, but this was a great tip!
Help!!! We just rented a place while we build our home. We’ll they had a cat and a dog that used to pee here and it stinks!! We are also very allergic to cats and dogs and are very itchy! Please help we already moved in 🙁
Can you use this mixture in a rug shampooer
I’m not sure. I would call the 1-800 number on your shampooer and ask them.
what items/ingredients can I use to put into my hose and spray outside where I have a dog run that my dogs pee and poop in? please write back as I am anxious to know.
Hi, I have been using this method for about a month now. We moved into a new townhouse, and my dog marked a few times practically in every room in the house. I have managed to get out all stains and even the smell in the house except for our bedroom. It still smells like pee. I have scrubbed the walls, and smelled each inch of my floor to try to figure out where its coming from. How do I get rid of this?
My daughter brought her cat home with her (after graduating from college) and with it, the cat found a corner in our carpeted family room where she used it to urinate in. Unfortunatley, I have an exceptional ability to pick up any minute odour, and as you know cat urine is not a hidden odour. I scoured the internet for remedies and I found this recipe. I applied it once, the smell (to me) was there but 90% better. I applied a second time and I would say it was 99% gone. It could be even be 100% but my nose just knows. Anyways, I applied a 3rd coat this monrning and once it dries I will be applying the Purifying technique. Thank you so much for this post. Great help. It will be interesting to see how long it will last (ie if it is permanent elimination or if the odour will come back). But in the interim, I have passed this onto many. Thanks – you really don’t know how much this has helped. I was litterally going to replace the carpet once the cats leaves should I not have find a remedy.
I used this on a couch that a cat peed on …. Amazing, seriously the best. It is a similar recipe to what we use to wash the dog or cat that gets sprayed by a skunk. Thank you than you thank you. I truly thought ot was heading for the curb.
Does the hydrogen peroxide stain dark coloured tiles?
I have several cats that have been peeing in my house for years. I’ve tried everything that I’ve found on-line in an attempt to remove the smells. I would like to try your product but I’m talking about large areas. Will your formula work in a carpet steam shampooer? Do you know if someone has tried and, if so, do you know if it was successful?
I am not sure if it will work in a carpet steam machine. Check the instructions of your machine before trying anything. If you do try it, please let us know how it worked.
