When Accidents Happen
Many of us are blessed to have animals to brighten our lives! They bring us so much joy, don’t they? But what happens when an accident occurs?
You know what I mean, your puppy is potty training and pees on the carpet or your cat is getting old and misses the kitty litter. How do you get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way?
Stick around…I am about to tell you how! But first…here is our story.
Here Is Our Story
A few years ago we had a cat, Mason. We just LOVED Mason! I mean how cute is Mason right?
Unfortunately, Mason was getting very old, 17 years in this picture. With age, sometimes cats begin to have kidney problems and oftentimes have a hard time squatting and pee standing up rather than squatting. This leads to the cat spraying urine on the wall behind the litter and oftentimes on the sides of the litter.
Well….have you ever tried to get cat urine out of carpet or hardwood floors before? Oh my gosh, it is nearly impossible.
I tried everything under the sun to try to get rid of these smells but it wasn’t until I tried to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way that I finally tackled my problem!
And then Gemma came along…PUPPY….need I say more? Puppy and Pee go hand and hand don’t they? With these two adorable pictures are you wanting to run out and get a fuzzy animal yet?
So with an aging cat and a new puppy, you could imagine that we experimented a LOT with getting urine out of carpets and floors.
I think I have finally perfected the PERFECT formula to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!
How To Get Rid of Dog and Cat Urine Odors The All Natural Way
So what is this formula you ask? Would you believe me if I told you it has only 4 ingredients? Better yet, you most likely already have these 4 ingredients in your home already!
Here is what you are going to need:
- Empty Spray Bottle
- White Vinegar (See my post on How Vinegar Gets Bad Odors Out of HE Washer Machines)
- Dish Soap with Orange Scent, or Wild Orange Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here), (note: I have found that essential oils produce the best results).
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Baking Soda
Depending on the size of the area you are treating you might need to double or triple this recipe. Only make what you are going to use.
Safety Note: Dispose any leftover formula, do not leave it in the spray bottle.
Although this is a natural formula, you are mixing together items that could have a reaction if left to sit. Be safe and properly dispose of the leftovers if any.
As with any product, ALWAYS test a small section of the carpet, hardwood floors or furniture to make sure that this formula doesn’t react negatively with your items.
We used this formula on wood, carpets and linoleum floors and had no issues with any of them…but always check to be on the safe side!
The Formula
Now that we have the ingredients and safety all taken care of, let’s dive into this simple formula.
Pour the following ingredients into a spray bottle:
- 5 oz hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tsp vinegar
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp dishwasher orange soap (something about the orange scent help break up the urine smell), or for best results use 3 drops of wild orange essential oil (You Can Buy Here)
When all of the ingredients have been added, gently shake the bottle. Now simply generously spray the affected area with this solution and allow to completely dry. It will become powder-like once the formula dries.
Once it dries vacuum up the powder. If the smell is still there, then repeat this step again and add the extra step included below.
Final Application To Purify The Area
If you want to take this formula one step further, be sure to purify the area. To do:
- Add 6 drops of Lemon Essential Oil (You Can Buy Here) to 1 cup of baking soda and place into a container and shake until well combined.
- Sprinkle on the dry affected area and leave on for several hours or overnight.
- Vacuum up and you will be good to go!
That’s It, How Easy Was That?
That is it! Easy right? Who knew it was so easy to get rid of dog and cat urine odors the all natural way!
As always, I am here if you should have any questions! Feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

was just wondering if you did research on the air renu paint additive? I read up online about it and it seems great? but that doesn’t help to much…my girlfriend and I just moved into a house with a real nasty smell, we’ve had the carpets professionally done, our ducts cleaned, all the fans on and windows open with minimal results. Our carpet cleaners are coming back free of charge because they said they could retify the smell as it hadnt seeped through the carpets and that they could not detect any urine stains. With all that being said I’m guessing painting the house might be our final option. Hopefully you’ve researched and even more hopefully its the real deal!
Thanks
I was wondering, will this formula also repel the cat from returning to that area? He has urinated just outside his litter box and saturated the wood floor.. at this time, I can’t relocate the box, so if its going to be a repellent for him entering the litter box, this may not be my best solution right now…?
I don’t like the smell of orange essential oil. Will lavender work in the recipe for removing dog /cat urine smell?
My cat about 7. I got him from a friend who had one cat and he was just fine. They had a friend move in that has 3 cats but kept them in her closed room. They did not come out. Seemed shortly after he started urinating all over (it is a large 3 story home) I do have 2 of my own cats so i took him in and introduced him slowly. He used the litter box just fine. I have him for 2 month and he is going pee on carpet and furniture. I have little boxes all over and clean them everyday. I will definitely try this but will this help him to stop completely? I did retrain by putting him in own room for a few days and he used litter box each time. He has been checked by vet and is fine. I would never get rid of him. As soon as you walk in you smell urine. Would anxiety for him make him stop? I’m desperate any other information would be truly appreciated. Thank you in advance for any suggestions. Em
I have a 4 year old Maltese Terrier mix he paper trained easy because he hates rain and snow. Over the last year he has been using the papers less and the floor more so we have been trying to get him to go outside he does good if the weather is good but if not he won’t go outside he will hold it until he comes in and then go inside. Sometimes he goes on the papers good for several times then he goes elsewhere and my floor is starting to smell. Any ideas on how to get the smell out of my house and also how to better get him to go where he is suppose to
I’m so glad I found this post! i have a big problem with my cat urine odor 🙁 I’ll try some of the solutions I read here.
Thanks for this. Our cat peed in the bathroom and we could not get the smell out, but this did the trick! I just orange hand cleaner (the kind with pumice) and the smell was gone in one spray!
Glad it worked for you! 🙂
I’m just getting ready to try your formula on our NEW rug. Can you tell me what percentage of hydrogen peroxide you use please? I don’t want a big white match on my red rug!!!:)
I’m really nervous about using essential oils…I thought they are harmful to cats….?
Hey Courtney,
I talk about this issue in my latest essential oils book. You can download a free copy here:

If you do decide to use essential oils be sure to use therapeutic grade oils.
Just googled this and came across your article, thanks for the handy tips. Our poor dog has recently had an ‘accident’ and the whole house stinks!
oh dear..hopefully this will help, as I am just about desperate with 2 19 year old cats, one of whom is very geriatric and short of putting him to sleep I am at a loss…
cleaning every couple of hours and keeping him confined in an area of the house where he has, litter, bed and food/water readily accessible without having to much to much.
I have started the discussion of the long au revoire with my children, who are heart broken already over his very quickly worsening bodily condition. I will do the right thing if the vet tells me that my friend is in pain.
However, I don’t believe in that as he has brought us much love an joy and no pet should ever just have to leave when inconveniencing his/her owner in the first place!!
So unless he is suffering, I will take care of him. Just need to find a way to minimize messes and make life livable for him.
I’ll try this and will post an update here. Thank you!
Thanks so much for these natural options! I have a little puppy and I really need a solution!
