Two Ingredients I Can Not Live Without In My Bathroom!

Coconut Oil & Honey

I can still remember the day that I took a glance at the ingredients of my personal care products.  First of all, I had no idea what half of the ingredients were.  So I began to do a little research and dug a little deeper to find out what these ingredients were and their possible side effects.  I was shocked with what I found.  Here is an article, Toxic ingredients in personal care products, that showcases just a few of the ingredients that you might find in your personal care products that can be harmful to your health.

So just what do I use to replace some of these harmful personal care products with?  I have two products that I could not live without in my bathroom!  They are coconut oil and raw honey!  Let me start with coconut oil.

Coconut oil is an amazing product.  I alway try to keep in mind that our skin is our largest organ and what we absorb into our skin will ultimately effect our health.  So when I began to use coconut oil for my personal care products, I could rest assure that I was not doing my body any harm, in fact just the opposite was true.  Coconut oil has so many beneficial elements!  Click here to read my post on coconut oil, Organic Coconut Oil and It’s Uses, Benefits & Recipes.  Here are a few ways that I currently use coconut oil as my personal care products.

Moisturizer – I use coconut oil as a moisturizer for my face and also my body.  You can use it directly out of the jar or you can whip the coconut oil for 5-7 minutes on high speed and it will become smooth and soft and will have a closer consistency as a lotion.  Simply rub it onto your skin/face and allow and allow it to absorb for 5 minutes before putting makeup or clothes on.

Eye Cream/Eye Make Up Remover – To remove stubborn mascara, simply spread a little coconut oil over your closed eye, and rub on eyelashes.  It will instantly remove the mascara.  If you want to remove the dark circles from under your eyes or the puffiness, simple rub a little coconut oil on the skin.

Deodorant – I use coconut oil as a natural deodorant.  Simple spread a little onto your arm pit, let it dry (about 5 minutes), and that is all you will need to smell fresh and stay dry!

Toothpaste – It is so easy to make your own toothpaste.  Simple add equal parts coconut oil and baking soda and then add xylitol and peppermint extract to taste.  I use whipped coconut oil and then place it into a small squeeze bottle and there is my homemade toothpaste!  Not only is this a toothpaste, it also naturally whitens your teeth.

Deep conditioner – I use about 2 tsp of coconut oil (I have short hair, if you have longer you might have to use a little more) and rub it into my ends first and then run my fingers throughout the rest of my scalp and hair.  I use a shower cap and leave it on for 30 minutes.  Wash and rinse and style as usual.

Dry ends – Sometimes my ends of my hair get frizzy, especially when I am in need for a cut.  I just simple add a little bit of coconut oil right on the dry ends and it smooths them out.

Chapstick – I have found that the best Chapstick is coconut oil with a little peppermint extract or some other essential oils.

Shaving Cream/ Aftershave – When I shave my legs, or when my husband shaves his face, simple rub a little coconut oil on your face/legs and then shave.  Remember to moisturize after you shave to prevent bumps from appearing.

Think of how much money you could save by replacing just these products with coconut oil and the health benefits are amazing too!

So my second ingredient that I love to use is raw honey.  How do I use this?  Two ways!

Face Wash – I use raw honey as a natural face wash.  Simple take 1/4-1/2 tsp of raw honey and add a few drops of water and work into a lather (it won’t be a soapy lather, just becomes more spreadable).  Rub all over face and allow to dry for about 5 minutes.  Then just simple wash off with some warm water.

Face mask – I also love to use raw honey as a face mask.  Just take 1 tsp oat flour, 1 tsp greek yogurt, and 1/8 tsp of raw honey.  Mix very well and spread onto face.  Leave on face for 15-20 minutes.  Rinse with warm water and a warm wash cloth.  Your skin will be so smooth you will wonder why you haven’t been using this mask for years.

So here were just a few ways to take natural, healthy ingredients out of your kitchen and take them into your bathroom!  I am sure there are many more recipes, ingredients that can be used in your bathroom.  If you know of any, please feel free to share them in the comment section below.

@jgard41 No it does not get hard again…Now if it gets to warm in your house (summer months) it might liquefy but the consistency will remain the same in a climate that is below 74 F

@hallecottis That is pretty amazing because I use it as toothpaste and have to dig it out of the jar. I will try your way – thanks!

I used it on my hair and it dried my hair out so badly, it took  over a week for it to be ok again.  I don’t know if it’s because I have curly hair but I was very disappointed.
