Family Friendly Fridays: How To Make Homemade Soda Pop

Homemade Soda Pos

My Girls’ First Soda Pop

Welcome to Family Friendly Fridays! I hope you all are having a wonderful week. 🙂 Today I, well I should say, Kenna, Aubree and I are going to show you how to make a healthier and wonderful soda pop!

Would you believe me if I told you that my girls have never had a soda, pop, soda pop, coke (whichever one you call it) before? Well, they haven’t! They have never shown an interest in it until the other day. One of my girls was invited to a birthday party and they had soda pop there.

When she got home from the party, she asked me if she could try soda pop. I knew this day would come! My husband looked at me and said, “How are you going to pull this one out of a hat?” My response, “Simple, we will make our own!”

Choosing A Flavor

So here we are… making our own soda pop! It really is super easy to make and the girls had so much fun making their own flavored soda pop. Kenna chose orange soda and Aburee chose to make blueberry soda pop!  If Brynn was here for this activity, she would have picked strawberry soda pop for sure!

This recipe has so much room for creativity. Choose your favorite flavor and go with it. So here are the simple steps in making your very own soda pop!

The Makings Of Soda Pop

Choose a flavor. Anything goes…blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, grape, etc. We used 1 orange per glass of soda for Kenna and 1/4 cup blueberries for Aubree’s soda.

Pick Your Fruit Of Choice

Crush the berries to get the juice out of them. It is best to have your fruit at room temperature, it is easier to extract the juice out of the fruit.

If using a citrus fruit, it is best to squeeze the juice out, not crush it.

Squeeze The Juices Out of Fruit

Strain the berries removing the seeds and skins. Now dissolve your sweetener of choice (organic sugar, rapunzel sugar, coconut sugar, or maple syrup) in a little hot water. If using maple syrup, you don’t have to dissolve that in hot water, it is fine how it is. We liked rapunzel sugar the best. Sweeten to desired sweetness. We used about 1 tablespoon of coconut sugar in this recipe and dissolved it in about 1 tablespoon of hot water.

Strain Fruit                   Stir sweetener with water to dissolve

Transfer your strained berries or juice to a pint mason jar. Add your simple syrup (dissolved sugar and water mixture) to the jar.

Pour Simple syrup and strained fruit into cup

Add your mineral water of choice. I added about 7 ounces of mineral water. I used Perrier but Pellegrino or another mineral water would work too.

Pour Mineral Water Into Mixture                   Pour Mineral Water Into Mixture

Gently stir your soda. Be careful when pouring in the mineral water, it will fizz up just like soda pop would! My girls loved this 🙂

Stir                   Be Careful, just like soda it can fizz over!

Now add a little ice if you choose and sit back and enjoy a nice glass of homemade soda pop!

Enjoying Their Sodas

I haven’t had soda for 16 months or so & I do something very similar when I crave. Little carbonation. I have used a splash of cherry juice & add lime.

Sometimes I use my orange flavored liquid stevia for a quick orange soda 🙂

This is a great idea! So far my son has not had pop either. But this would also just add a little variety for him.

My daughter just turned 8. Be prepared for him to be a little afraid of the bubbles. My girls were like, “this tickles my nose”, LOL 🙂 Happy Birthday to your son (Easter Birthday)!

Halle! Ok, this is over the top amazing!!! Love it! We do not drink soda and sometimes it is hard for our boys to always be drinking “water” when every other kid is drinking sugary juices, soda, etc.  They will be SO excited to hear “we can make soda.”  I can see us making this on a hot summer day! Thanks so much! (the link is working… thx for your patience!) Can’t wait for you to share it with us at Kids in the Kitchen.  Such a blessing you are!!! 🙂

This sounds like a great idea. I am going to try it with my husband. I have been trying to get him to switch to water from pop or the flavored store water for quite some time.  Thanks Halle.
