Homemade Organic Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe {A Perfect Gift For The Holidays}!

homemade organic hot cocoa mix WholeLifestyleNutrition.com.

H.E.L.L.O Hot Chocolate!

Ok so the time has come…temperatures have fallen, well at least in Wisconsin they have, and we even had our first snowfall last week!!

And ya know what…the first snow fall you just HAVE to have hot cocoa right?

Have you ever pulled out one of the packaged hot chocolate mixes at the supermarket before and checked out the ingredients?

You know, the ones in a box at the supermarket, the processed kinds!  Prepare yourself, there are so many questionable ingredients that your head will start spinning!

So I set out to make my own homemade organic hot cocoa mix recipe and I was shocked at how easy it was to make!  For real!

Meet My Family

We have a lot of new faces here, so I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to Whole Lifestyle Nutrition.  We are so glad you are here!

I thought I’d take a moment to introduce you to my family.  Yah, that is the love of my life, Dave. Handsome isn’t he?   😀

We have 3 beautiful girls that amaze me every day.  I am so blessed to have them in my life.  I have a set of twins (Aubree is on the left and Brynn is on the far right) and then Kenna is my oldest.

Yah, and here I am with my babies…I know, they aren’t babies, but to me they sure are.  They still call me mama.  I absolutely LOVE that and hope they always continue calling me that.

Our family absolutely loves sledding and snowboarding!  We have some pretty incredible sledding parks here in Wisconsin. We sure do get a lot of snow up here, and pretty much stay snowed in for close to 6 months so we embrace the winter weather.

Enjoying A Delicious Cup of Hot Cocoa

After spending several hours out on a cold winters day, we almost always come in and warm up with a cozy cup of hot cocoa!

I mean look at this picture, don’t you want a cup?  What’s not to love about a rich cup of hot chocolate?

Adding Marshmallows To Your Cocoa

My girls absolutely LOVE marshmallows in their cocoa, and so do I!  But here is the thing…there are some pretty nasty marshmallows out there, so keep and eye out for marshmallows that are made with quality ingredients.

We actually buy ours from a local health food store, but my favorite brand when I can’t make it to the local store is Organic Vanilla Marshmallows.  They are organic and made with GMO-free ingredients.

I understand that a cup of cocoa is a treat, and so do my girls.  I am okay if they want to splurge with a cup of cocoa that has sugar iamn it and topped with velvety marshmallows.  It is a treat you all, it is okay to splurge and enjoy!

Making Your Own Marshmallows

So go ahead and add in your favorite marshmallows, oh and if you feel compelled to make your own, they are super easy to make.

Just make sure that you are using a quality gelatin from a grass fed source!  This is my brand of choice, Great Lakes Unflavored Gelatin, Kosher.

Here is an incredible recipe that shows you how easy it is to make your own quality marshmallows. Oh and your kids will love making these little gems too!

A Great Holiday Gift {Especially For Teachers}!

With 3 girls in school, I am always looking for a creative teacher’s gift that is from the heart and is reasonable, easy and affordable to make!

Check out that adorable cup in the picture below!  I got that at Michaels for $2.95. While you’re there grab some cute ribbon to tie on the mason jar, or better yet, you can get some cute little bags to add the cocoa mix in.

A Free Template For An Attachable Recipe Card

Then just place the small bag of homemade organic hot cocoa mix and a recipe card nicely typed out (you can find free holiday printable recipe cards here)  and a little bag of homemade marshmallows.  Super cute right?

My girls love to help with this part and it is super cute when it is in their own words!

Making This Homemade Organic Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe

So let’s make this hot cocoa mix already, what do you think?  We will make enough so that you have enough to store in your pantry. Then when the time comes,  you can just pull it out and whip up a quick cup of hot cocoa!

It is time for us to get back to sledding so we can come back home in about an hour or so and pull out the homemade organic hot cocoa mix recipe and snuggle up with each other in front of a warm fire.

We’ve got some sledding to do, oh and our new favorite…snowboarding (have you tried it??, It is hard…but super fun!)

Description

This Homemade Organic Hot Cocoa Mix for you or as a gift that’s perfect for the holidays!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup organic cane sugar, rapadura, coconut sugar or granulated honey
  • 1/2 cup organic cocoa powder
  • 6 oz per cup milk of choice

Instructions

  1. Combine sugar and cocoa powder in a pint size mason jar.
  2. Place the lid on and shake until well combined.
  3. On the stove top, warm 6 oz of milk to desired temperature. Do not boil the milk.
  4. Once warm, stir in 2 tbsp of hot cocoa mix per 6 ounces of milk and stir until dissolved. So if you are making 2 cups you would add 12 oz of milk and 4 tbsp of the hot cocoa mix.
  5. Pour into mug and add marshmallows or fresh whipped cream.

I use 1/2 this amount of sugar. I often add cinnamon, coffee, vanilla, sea salt, and/or chili powder.

Apparently that is all there is. Sugar and cocoa. No recipe that I see either. Just add milk to cocoa and sugar.

The recipe is in the article…1 cup organic sugar & 1/2 cup organic cocoa. Put it in a jar with a lid and shake to mix. Use 1 tablespoon per 6oz serving of milk.

Connie, The recipe states, stir in 2 tbsp of hot cocoa mix per 6 ounces of milk, not 1.

Cloves and nutmeg with the cinnamon and steeped with pure coconut cream (not what is used for Lina colodas but the meat and water of the coconut blended is awesome! Carribean style, what they refer to as chocolate tea

Thank you for the recipe.  Great gift idea.  I hope you don’t mind but I wanted to find a “complete” cocoa mix making possible for one to just add boiling water so I added to your recipe. What I added was 1 1/2 cups dry coconut milk powder, 1 tsp. organic, non GMO cornstarch, 1/2 tsp sea salt and 1/2 tsp. vanilla powder.
It worked really well.  I did a test drive and was very pleased so went ahead and made up the 3 gift jars.  Now that is finished.
Again, I hope you don’t mind my playing with your recipe and please don’t think that yours is not great…… I was just looking for the complete version so I could get my grandkids off the instant package deals that they have been drinking. 🙂

dnjclarkster–with your added ingredients, how much of the dry mix do you add to the hot water to make a desirable cup of cocoa?

Thanks for the recipe – I am planning on giving as a couple of Christmas gifts. I thought you might want to know that when you hit the “Print” recipe button it prints out an *entire* page of the cute picture and takes 3 pages to print the entire recipe (which actually only took about 1/3 page). That’s a LOT of ink and 3 pages of paper : / (I know – no good deed goes unpunished, right?! 🙂 Just wasn’t sure if you were aware of this). Thanks again!

Even better–split a vanilla bean and tuck it in there, and let it sit for a while, shaking when you think of it. Add about 1/4 teaspoon sea salt to the mix, as well, to round out the flavor.

Thank you! I’ve been craving hot cocoa! This is perfect, because we’re living in Costa Rica, and hot chocolate box mixes are expensive (and have long ingredient lists…). The kids are to bed, and as the terrible procrastinator I am, I still haven’t wrapped presents!! I will whip up some of your cozy, easy hot chocolate, and get to wrapping! =) Happy Holidays!

I know it’s early, but I’m already thinking about gifts for next Christmas and figured I would try out some different hot cocoa recipes while it’s cold outside. This looks amazing. I have a friend who is diabetic. Do you have any suggestions as to things I could do to make this more diabetic friendly?

I will try this with Lakanto (less amount than the sugar, maybe 1/2 cup) and with cinnamon. The Lakanto is totally safe on the candida diet! I know cocoa is supposedly a no no but I just have to live too! Also for a more adult version and to give it a Mexican twist, a little cayenne
