I was surprised how easy it was to grow kohlrabi. This was my first year growing kohlrabi and I will be growing it again next year. Kohlrabi only needs about 6″ of soil to grow in. It likes rich well drained soil and I planted 4 kohlrabi plants per square foot. I planted these 4 plants at the end of May, and here it is the first week of July and I am already harvesting my plants.
To harvest kohlrabi, I just cut the plant at the base of the bulb. I then took the leaves off and left only the bulb of the plant. The leaves are edible and can be used steamed with some butter and a little salt and pepper. I then peeled the outside layer of skin off and then used the inside of the bulb for my recipe.

There are so many ways you can prepare kohlrabi. You can roast it, steam it, or eat it raw with a little salt or pepper. I made some delicious kohlrabi apple slaw! Click here for my Kohlrabi Apple Slaw Recipe.

So when you are planning your garden next year, be sure to include kohlrabi in it. Kohlrabi is a cool weather crop and can be grown in most areas in the early spring and fall months.
