What is Diatomaceous Earth and Why You Should NEVER Ingest It?

What is diatomaceous earth and why you should NEVER ingest it! | WholeLifestyleNutrition.com

What Is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth is a chalk-like substance that is composed of fossilized diatoms that have formed together into silica deposits. The silica deposits are grounded into a fine powder called diatomaceous earth.

There are two different grades of diatomaceous earth; food grade and pool grade.

  • Food grade diatomaceous earth is safe to use for the home, yards, and animals to name a few.
  • Pool grade diatomaceous earth is altered by high heat and is only safe to use in pools.

Be sure to buy for natural solutions.

It is most commonly used as a natural insecticide and is great to use on your furry friends to get rid of fleas.

How Do I Use Diatomaceous Earth?

There are many uses for diatomaceous earth. In fact, it is one of the most used ingredients in my !

Here are just a few natural solutions that are featured in my book:

  • Scouring Powder
  • Carpet Stain Remover
  • Carpet Deodorizer
  • Refrigerator Deodorizer
  • Trash Can Deodorizer
  • Car Deodorizer
  • Eliminate Asian Lady Bettles
  • Eliminate Cockroaches
  • Eliminate Fleas
  • Eliminate Ants
  • Eliminate Bed Bugs
  • Eliminate Hornets & Wasps

But before you start browsing around, go ahead and that will leave you wondering — “What did I ever do without this stuff”? Seriously, it is that powerful!

Diatomaceous Earth Should NEVER Be Ingested!

Now I know diatomaceous earth is kind of a trendy ingredient these days.

More and more people are ingesting diatomaceous earth and I’m not sure that is such a good idea.

After reading Anthony William’s book , he goes into great detail on why it isn’t a good idea to ingest diatomaceous earth. Here are a few of his thoughts on ingesting diatomaceous earth:

If you’re using diatomaceous earth products, beware. They’re really, really, really a problem with the immune system. They’re touted as being good for the immune system. They’re touted as being good for the intestinal tract. People are consuming this. Uh-uh, not a good idea at all whatsoever. I don’t care if you haven’t felt a negative impact yet, you have to be cautious.

What this does, it’s like diatomite. It’s a soft rock. It becomes like a white powder. It tenaciously binds to the inside lining of your intestinal tract and it suffocates the intestinal tract. That sounds kind of spooky, right?

What that does is it stop absorption is micronutrient trace minerals. If you continue to use these diatomaceous earth products and you internalize them, you’re taking them internally, you will become deficient in so many vitamins and minerals, everything that it says it does and do.

Not to mention, if you’re a sensitive person with colitis, Crohn’s, IBS, spastic colon, peristaltic action issues, everything, anything in the digestive arena, you don’t want to be ingesting diatomaceous earth. I’m just going to say it right here. You can read more of Anthony’s damaging health fads report here.

I personally do not feel that enough research has been done to ingest this ingredient, so for that reason, I’d recommend not ingesting it. If you are dead set on taking diatomaceous earth internally, please talk to a qualified physician about the possible side effects.

    This article is completely misleading.

The most important fact that is NOT mentioned in this article is that there are *two different forms* of diatomaceous Earth. The one labelled “food grade” is extremely healthful. The one not labelled “food grade” should never be ingested and can indeed do harm.

Food grade diatomaceous Earth helps your digestive tract in myriad ways, and has been used successfully for many years by many people. It is indeed an asset for those with digestive ills.

But never ever ingest any diatomaceous Earth that is not labelled “food grade”! It is not meant to be eaten by humans.

Does anyone know if DE can also kill the friendly gut bacteria?

My husband tried it and had several serious seizures right afterward- he does have epilepsy due to brain trauma. He did not have a seizure in a long time before this, AND he never had more than one in a day. THis was 3 horrid ones, in a few short hours. He was very incoherant for a few minutes after, which he usually goes back to normal right away.
Just wanted to make sure people knew that it can interfere with meds., and just to be cautious.
I personally have had no trouble with it (except that sorry to be graphic, but the toilet clogs with #2 when I’m using D.E.) OTher than that, I feel great from it.

I have three cats that i have used DE for fleas and worms. Two of them do fine on it. The third, has seizures. When they first started, i convinced myself it wasn’t the DE because we were only using it externally on their fur and in the house and yard. And she started having seizures before i used it internally for them. She was about two when this happened and had never had seizures before. Recently, she hadn’t had one for a very long time until i started using DE again yesterday, because i found a worm. I put it in their food and today she seized. I’m going to stop using it internally or even indoors any more. I think there are some essential oil and other methods for fleas and worms that i will try instead. If anyone has had luck with something else, please let me know.

the lack of any kind of research is astounding and to say things on a health website is not responsible. site something! while DE may or may not be good for anytihg internally for humans. this “blocking” the gut is silly and 100% made up in some naturopaths mind no doubt or maybe a chiro. Anyway, DE is used ALOT in farming pigs infact, who absorb nutrients like us.. if a farmer noticed he had to supplement more by using said product they would not use it esp if caused noticible SIGNIFICANT changes that blocked nutrietn uptake as they want to get them fat as possible fast! I am assuming it is mixed in much higher rates then folks are eating it. major concerns would be heavy metal content as oceans lakes etc concentrate heavy metals radioactive ones aswell esp in muddy bottoms that concentrate for 100s of thousands of years where these are mined.

do the candida spit test in a glass of water, then add DE, you will see the webs being dismantled.

all drugs are derivatives of plants (or natural source) taken and manipulated by drug companies made to maintain a condition (never to cure it), with side effects that can be worst than what its treating.

Good article although i wouldn’t say it’s perfectly fine for everyone. I can confirm that i get a rash reaction when it touches my skin. Also, my cat has developed a dry patch on her skin where she has a newly formed bald spot from over grooming. No vet has been able to suggest a verified reason and after multiple pet specific solutions nothing has resulted in an answer to why she developed this habit. This started only when we moved into our latest apartment where the cleaners use D.E. prior to moving in. I know this is simply an assumption but I have a feeling she may be reacting to the D.E. as well. Perhaps there are multiple types of D.E. and we have a one off situation going on.
I am in the process of doing deep cleaning and vacuuming quite often to get this stuff up but boy is it stubborn!
Again, thank you for the article but i just wanted to state my experience with it as i’m newly learning about it.

It sounds very much as if your cat is allergic to fleas – this causes the cat affected to over-groom in an effort to relieve the itch and irritation they experience from even one flea bite.

Your apartment may well have been treated with DE, but fleas can and do jump onto any passing host outdoors or in other peoples’ homes, or even in stores. I used to work in a well-known UK chemists and beauty shop, selling Mary Quant cosmetics, and every time I opened one of the stock drawers behind my counter there were carpet fleas. Whilst different types of fleas all have their own preference as to the host they most prefer to feast on, all of them will jump on any passing body. If they don’t like the taste at the first bite, they jump off again to lie in wait for a different host.

If your cat is allergic to fleas, even a single flea bite can cause bald patches in their fur.

Has your cat been inspected for fleas?

Hey guys I am Landon. I wanted to start this off by saying I am not going to read every comment on this page but just by seeing one I am going to comment as well. This person Anthony William’s that you are talking about. Look at his credibility. He states “tenaciously binds to the inside lining of your intestinal tract and it suffocates the intestinal tract”. But if you look him up on google, he is “a medium who offers pseudoscientific medical and health advice based on alleged communication with a spirit.” Basically he has no REAL license in medicine or degree in college or anything science based that we should trust. I understand we can learn over time however knowing he has no credibility or known experience such as tests, experiments, recording, just a big mouth, we should not listen to him. Also, “based on alleged communication with a spirit”, count me out! If I am learning what to put in my body and what to eat, I don’t want to learn from a spirit. I want just regular hardcore tests, experiments, credibility, experience, and EVIDENCE. So much now-adays we have people that made crap up. I am going to continue taking DE food grade.

[Things I have learned: Silicon nano-meter can be absorbed by rats at safe amounts for 28 days with no noticeable biological problems. DE can be as small as 3Micrometers all the way to 1millimeter. Absorption of DE in rats was seen to be dependent on size. And the size that they started to absorb was noted once reaching nano-meter size. Seeing that DE can be all the way around 3UM(Micrometers) and 1micrometer is 1000nanometers, It is obvious that the rats absorbed a good amount of silica with no toxic effects. And seeing that humans digestive organs are much more complex, we must be able to absorb a good amount of silica from ingesting DE. That being said, more research is needed to understand the full effects of silica that is safe. Right now, In the united states the limit is 2% per ration ingested. (This is because the effects of more are not known). ] >>>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4184165/<<>>https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6466221/<<<

Thanks for reading my insight on food grade DE.

These are detox symptoms. Just cut down on amount of DE for awhile. Then titrate up.

Could be few issues, IF @ all DE related, most likely-not enough water, or too high dosage, Herxheimer response, or unrelated issues.. If you start, take very low dose, & lots of fluid.

I took the tiniest bit, like 1/4 tsp in water (I left a comment of my experience if you want to read it) and had a huge reaction from it. Yes it did cause rapid heart palpitations. Kept me up all night. In fact, I think if I had taken more, I would have been in real trouble. I kept at it but I didn’t take nearly the amount that other people talk about taking. I only took the tiniest bit (I think even 1/8 tsp might be a lot for someone) in the morning with water. In a couple weeks, it no longer caused the heart palpitations, even when I increased the amount to 1 tsp. For me it definitely was worth taking in the long run. But only because I went at a pace my body could handle and didn’t overdue it. I take this stuff seriously. A lot of people don’t react much at all to it but I think it could be dangerous for some people if they take too much at once. I read at one point that when Candida is killed, it’s byproducts can cause heart palpitations. However, I don’t remember where I read that. I just thought mentioning it might lead you in the direction of some answers. Anyway, I can’t say DE is right for you but I hope hearing my experience helps inform you in some way. The heart response can be intense. And of course, headaches (which luckily I didn’t experience), can be a scary thing when you don’t know why you’re experiencing them. I wish you and your health the best

Had the exact same reaction, but only after 2nd day of just 1/2 tsp in am on empty stomach, waiting an hr before eating…I probably got the symptoms of dehydration, though, as I didn’t increase my water intake~ But I already have a hard time keeping minerals from flushing out due to leaky gut so I have to drink electrolyte drinks more than water~ So I don’t think it’s a good idea for me. I think the dehydration is what caused those symptoms, as I’ve experienced it before. I think that is probably also what may have caused that man’s seizures~ So, I won’t be trying it again. Gotta know your limits.

I swear, do not ever use diatomaceous earth in your house or anywere.
It is literally impossible to remove, I tried everything to make it go away it just wont! Especially in clothes and materials of the sort.
I am saying this because I feel my lungs have a hard time breathing and my eyes are red all the time.
I perform much worse in sports and I feel tired. This stuff is to be avoided at all cost please do not buy it and do not use it ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Deb RN says

      September 9, 2020 at 7:37 pm

This is not true. I have put DE heavily on bed, floor and carpet. It vacuums up easily. And gives energy. If you are tired, you are detoxing.

      • Aggie says

        May 27, 2021 at 7:26 am

        DEB RN,

        I absolutely agree!

We used the brown Feed Grade (not the human-friendly Food Grade white stuff) when one of our cats brought in fleas after playing with hedgehogs.

We quickly had ourselves a veritable infestation. I put DE down everywhere. Carpets, cushions, sofas, curtains, rugs, hard floors, glass table tops (we were seeing the little buggers everywhere), and kept an open plastic pot of it next to the bed and next to the sofa. I dropped DE on any I saw that hadn’t already trekked through one of my DE trails.

It hoovered up/ vacuumed up easily. I also thought it didn’t make as much dust as the Food Grade stuff. Maybe it’s coarser, I don’t know. I DO know it completely eradicated the flea problem. We brushed the 3 cats with it a couple of times a week, also put it in their food and water. No fleas, no worms. No bother.

Maybe the other poster mixed it with water or similar before putting it on their soft furnishings and carpets? ?

JI – it sounds more like hayfever than a reaction to DE! Have you seen a doctor to diagnose?

  10. Mark G says

    August 23, 2020 at 2:51 pm

Anthony Williams is not a doctor. And he even tells you on his website that everything is for entertainment purposes only. Also, he has no actual clinical evidence to back up any of the statements he has made. So why would you listen to him?

I have been vegan for 32 years and I have seen all sorts of flim flam artists come and go. Anthony Williams is one such person. I would never take advice from him. Especially considering that people have been consuming DE for decades.
