I’ve ordered my Scoby!
still think 2 weeks is unnecessary, but here are some fun recipes to try! check out the coffee one
I need one that tastes exactly like Coca-Cola. Is that possible? 🙂
I’m looking for the same thing, which is really the only reason why I’m commenting. I’m hoping someone that know’s the secret will see your comment and be willing to share! 🙂
You’ll never find it… I’ve had several people over the years say they figured it out. I tried theirs and disagreed. After disagreeing they changed their statement from “it tastes just like it” to “well it’s close or close enough”.
My suggestion (you probably won’t like it) is to simply give up on Coca Cola. I was an addict myself about 5 years ago. So many reason’s I couldn’t be happier with that decision. One main one besides health is the increase and broadening of my taste buds! It’s kinda like smoking, once I gave it up I can’t believe how much it stinks.. same with Coca Cola. I kinda think that like coffee.. it’s simply an acquired taste. In other words anyone could get used to it and eventually like/love it if they were to drink enough.
As far as Kombucha goes… I still like my blueberry/raspberry blend. 🙂
Best of luck in your search!
If you’ve ever seen Revive Boogie Down Cola Redux – the added flavors are lemon juice, vanilla extract, and almond extract. I’m going to try making a batch myself. https://www.revivekombucha.com/boogie-down/
I would try using a black tea for the starter and add some of that cola syrup they sell for the carbonated water machines. Just a hunch.
There are s many yummy flavors out there you will.forget about your coke addiction.. I did…best thing ever!!
Question – I started my first batch of Kombucha last Tuesday (today is Monday). I ordered the scoby from the place you recommended and received it very quickly (quite impressed). I used organic black and green teas and turbinado sugar. I rinsed the gallon jar I’m using in very hot water and white vinegar and I covered the jar with two unbleached coffee filters. Today when I checked the Kombucha, I discovered a white-ish film covering the top of the liquid. Is this normal or is my brew no good?
@Vicki totally normal! That is the new SCOBY forming. Do not disturb it, your kombucha is coming right along!
Cool – I was afraid it was ruined. Thank you for the quick response!
Yes that is what you what to see for a healthy scoby, it startled me too at first, and be prepared your scoby will grow fast.
Oh cool! I see a few I would like to try! 🙂
Brewing Kombucha is super easy Shannon Demiter! Don’t order a Scoby from them, pm me your address and I’ll send you one. After reading the instruction above, I brew mine completely different. Mine is stronger and less sweet. Second ferment with fruit not juice, makes for a better bubbly 🙂 I’ll write out my instructions for you.
What’s the trick to making it stronger and less sweet?
Thanks!!
Brew it a little longer and it will become stronger and less sweet.
I am so hooked on this stuff that I ordered a continuous brewing system this week! I’m curious if there is some trick to keeping the fizz in after the Kombucha is bottled and refrigerated?
@Vicki Mine still has fizz. I have found several tips work. One, are you doing the second ferment? After the kombucha is done, I add the berries and then bottle and store it in a dry warm place for 3 days…super fizzy even after refrigeration. Two, I have found that you need to fill the bottles up almost to the top and finally, blueberries offer the most fizz IMO.
I do the second ferment and put them in the pantry for 2-3 days. I have found that adding fruit seems to produce the most fizz but after I put in the frig they seem to lose a lot of the fizz. Maybe I’m not filling the bottles up enough – I usually fill them to within 1/2 inch or so to the top. I’ll try filling them more and see if that helps. I did make a cherry vanilla using frozen cherries and organic vanilla extract that we really liked.
I have my second batch brewing now! This time I am going to play with the second ferment and keeping the fizz….hibiscus kombucha, here I come!
What do you mean by pre made kombucha? Can I buy a bottle from the health food store and be fine to use tht?
Does this process produce any alcohol…I am “allergic” to alcohol and don’t want to “accidentally” ingest any.
Yes. Scoby is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast – yeast eats sugar and makes alcohol.
Thank you for this collection! I use kombucha for so many things, such as for making mustard, dressings, marinades, brine… and here is my recipe for peach kombucha sourdough bread. http://grassfood.wordpress.com/2013/06/17/peach-kombucha-sourdough-bread/
