Coconut butter is my new favorite snack. So just what is coconut butter or coconut cream? Coconut butter/cream is dehydrated coconut, preferably freshly dehydrated coconut flakes, that is put into the food processor/Vitamix and blended to form a liquid cream. It can be used on so many different foods. Coconut butter is like coconut oil. It is solid in cooler temperatures and in warmer temperatures it is liquid. It can be stored in a pantry. If you would like it to be a little runny (as shown in the picture), just heat it slightly. I like to drizzle coconut butter over fresh berries. It is also great as an icing on your favorite cookies or cakes.
This week I am posting a 4 video series about coconuts. This is the last video in this series. You will learn the following in this whole series:
- Video 1: How to open up a coconut and get coconut water
- Video 2: How to make coconut milk and dehydrate coconut flakes
- Video 3: How to make coconut flour
- Video 4: How to make coconut butter or coconut cream
If you should have any questions about this first video, please feel free to leave them in the comment section below.

My goal this morning was to Google if I could make my own coconut flour. I found your website and got so much more! If it wasn’t 17 below zero currently! I would be on my way to the grocery store right now. I’m hoping they will have decent coconuts available. How important will it be to find organic? I’m not sure I’ll have that option. Thanks for the great videos. I can’t wait to do this!

LOVED this series of coconut videos, thank you so much. Just to be sure I understand correctly, processing the dried coconut flakes for a short time will result in coconut flour, but processing the same dried flakes for about 10 – 15 minutes results in coconut butter. Is that correct?

Love your coconut videos. Use your hammer and break up the husks into smaller pieces. They make good mulch for your garden. They will gradually break down and improve your soil. You truly can use the whole coconut!

Hi Halle,
Thanks for your videos.
Does the coconut butter turn to the thick coconut creme? (used for coconut whipped cream) I would love to be able to make coconut creme. 🙂
I don’t have a dehydrator. But, can I use coconut chips? My package doesn’t list whether it is raw.
Thank you
Thank you

Yes, it does turn into a thick coconut cream. You can use coconut flakes to make coconut butter. If it is too thick, just add a little coconut oil to it. Good luck! 🙂

How do you make coconut cream?

Coconut butter, oil, flakes, are all a great delicious superfood when it is raw and organic. I can tell you that I am not disappointed with its wonderful taste and many uses. Coconut butter has a creamy dense texture, rich nutty flavor derived from grinding whole coconut flesh and has actual pieces of the coconut meat in it, not just the oil. Thanks for providing us how we can make it at home.

Hi Halle, I just wanted to ask if it is important to dehydrate the shredded coconut meat before making the coconut butter? I have made coconut milk from a fresh coconut and am looking at making coconut butter next. If you could please let me know that would be great. Thanks Karyn.
Halle Cottis says
Hi Karyn,
No, you don’t have to dehydrate it to make coconut butter, the meat will work just fine as is!

Hi Halle,
Thank you for getting back to me. I did try it but no matter how long I ran my food processor for it just wouldn’t work. I added coconut oil but it still didn’t work.
I don’t know whether maybe I processed the milk for too long and/or whether I squeezed it too much when making the milk. It still tasted nice even though it was more of a pulp. I ended up adding it to some almond butter so it wasn’t wasted.
I purchased some more coconuts to try again so hopefully it will work better next time.
I found an interesting post on YouTube on how to make cold pressed coconut oil. You still get the pulp, but instead of coconut milk it goes through a simple process to get the oil. At around $20 a jar for 1 litre here it is quite expensive so I may just give that a go too.
Thank you again for your response.
Kind Regards
Karyn
